Island residents will have a variety of summer activities to choose from
Despite budget cuts in the Verdun borough
Those in charge of culture, recreation and sports for the Verdun borough will have quite a challenge on their hands this year. They will have to come up with a way to offer a variety of interesting activities to both the young and the young at heart with a budget that is approximately 50% smaller that last year's.
Nevertheless, the presidents of the two commissions in charge of these sectors of activity, Josée Lavigeur-Thériault and Paul Beaupré, estimate that they will still be in a position to offer a varied program of activities throughout the entire summer season.

Some of the events to be presented, will be the Beba Pugliese Ensemble on the outdoor stage at the Verdun municipal greenhouse, on July 11, as part of the Festival International de tango de Montréal.

On Saturday, August 4, lovers of country music will enjoy Country un jour, country toujours, a day-long event that will culminate with a country concert by the group "On the road again". The event will take place at parc Arthur-Therrien.

The annual concert at West Vancouver Park, on the Island, will be taking place on Sunday, August 5. The Orchestre Métropolitain, led by young director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, is certain to mesmerize the audience. One significant change this year; the concert will begin at 4 p.m. and not at the beginning of the evening, as in past years.

All these activities are offered free of charge to Verdun borough residents, as well as to their friends and family.
From culture to sports to entertainment
The Verdun borough is blessed with a vast network of parks, cycling and walking paths, pools and a variety of sports facilities. Tennis, baseball, football, soccer, swimming, and now even fishing, can be practiced right in our own back yard. Verdun parks welcome a number of day camps, in collaboration with numerous organizations.
The borough's libraries and community centres remain very active throughout the summer and avid readers can even take advantage of reading in the fresh air, thanks to Livres en balade, a travelling library that is continuing again this year.

And let's not forget an activity that is becoming more popular as the years go by; dancing at the outdoor stage, right by the waterfront, at the municipal greenhouse. Young and old, lovers of the tango, the fox trot and salsa can indulge in their hobby almost every single night of the week.

This is just a brief overview of some of the summer fun awaiting Island residents. For more details, you can also log on to the borough website, at: ville.montreal.qc.ca/verdun
