Lots of tennis action expected at parc Elgar.
Nuns' Island Tennis Tournament hits the courts in July
Competition is open to all Island residents
With the tennis season coming into full swing, the tournament organizers have decided to kick things off a little earlier this year. Registration for the Nun’s Island Tennis Tournament has already begun at Elgar Park.
In its sixteenth season already, the Nun’s Island Tennis Tournament is a friendly competition, open to all residents. This tournament, organized by the Stéphane Leblanc in collaboration with the Verdun borough, is a community event that hopes to bring together players of all levels in a fun and social environment.
Tournament starts July 11
To better organize each category and to avoid monopolizing the Elgar tennis courts for the entire month of August, the first singles category is scheduled to start on July 11th.
This year the format has changed to allow more time between matches, each singles category starting on a Wednesday evening and continuing through the weekend, with the final scheduled for the following Monday evening. Similarly the doubles categories will be played from Wednesday to Monday, with daytime matches scheduled Saturday and Sunday.
Because of the growing popularity of the event and the steady increase in the island population every year, each singles category will be limited to thirty two participants and each doubles category to sixteen pairs. Starting things off is the Men’s Singles C level from July 11th to the 16th, followed by the Women’s Singles A and B level from July 25th to the 30th, and finally the Men’s Singles A and B level from August 22nd to 27th.
Doubles will start August 1st to 6th with the Women’s A and B level and the Men’s B level. Mix Doubles, both A and B level will be played from August 15th to the 20th and the season will end with a bang when the Men’s A level take the courts from August 29th to September 3rd.
Continuous support from local community and merchants
Organizer Stéphane Leblanc, who has been involved with the tournaments for well over a decade, was so pleased with last year’s turn-out that he hopes this year’s event will be equally successful.
He relies on the support of the community, including the numerous local businesses that generously sponsor the event, the enthusiastic participants and the great crowds who come out every year to cheer on their favourite players.
While this is a friendly competition, spectators over the years have never the less been entertained by some pretty spectacular matches. Leblanc looks forward to the start of the competition.
“I hope this year’s event will bring back all of the great players from last year but I’m also looking forward to new faces coming out and competing for the title!”
