Island volunteer tells us Hope's story and how we can help
It's almost hard to believe for many Island residents, who adore their pets and treat them as members of their immediate family, that this isn't always the case elsewhere.
Island resident Angela Hunter is a fierce animal lover and longtime volunteer for the SPCA Monteregie and she's here to remind us of why the need for such animal shelters remains as strong as ever.
Hope's story
On January 19, 2007 the SPCA Monteregie the largest no-kill shelter in Quebec, rescued dogs from a puppy mill in St. Mathieu de Laprairie. The dogs were found shivering in a cold dark barn without food or water for days on end. "The animals never saw the light of day," explains Angela.
The SPCA Monteregie caregivers named a Great Dane that was seized "Hope", in reference perhaps to the only thing all volunteers have when they work with such sad and often hopeless situations of animal abuse. Hope was in bad shape when she was found; bleeding from all over (including her eyes), badly emaciated and used for breeding.

Thanks to their loving care, Hope received a second chance in life and has now experienced what it feels like to be loved and cared for.

On Sunday, September 9, at the St. Lambert Seaway Park, the SPCA Monteregie will be holding their annual dog walk, which is their largest fundraiser. All animal lovers are encouraged to raise pledges for the SPCA Monteregie. With $75 worth of pledges and more, you will be able to get a free SPCA t-shirt. With a minimum of $25 worth of pledges, you will be able to take in the full day of activities. Pledge forms can be picked up at vet clinics, animal food stores or you can simply print one of the SPCA website: www.spcamonteregie.com.
On September 9, hundreds of animal lovers will come to St. Lambert Seaway Park on Riverside Drive to take part in the event. Participants will be able to receive advice from Jean Lessard a well-respected canine educator and dog trainer.

"I want people to see the 'before' and 'after' pictures of Hope, so they can understand why we desperately need the money to help more animals like her. If they buy puppies from pet shops their cute cuddly pups' parents could look like Hope and they are just inadvertently fueling the animal cruelty industry in Quebec," concluded Angela.
