New bridge project: committee formed

Mayor Trudel however did not provide too many comments but he did define the parameters imposed on the committee, explaining that the experts should think about the usefulness of a bridge, its location, its purpose and the costs for building it. He estimates that the committee should be able to file the report before the 30th of June this year.

It is known that this project has provoked strong sentiments. Some see only the benefits of such a bridge while others think it would cause multiple inconveniences. Not everyone shares the same opinion regarding the purpose of this bridge. The subject has in fact been discussed for more than 30 years. Former Mayor Raymond Savard had suggested it while he was Verdun’s federal deputy and re-initiated discussions when he was in City Hall. The project surfaced when former bookstore owner Jean-Claude Lapierre pressured officials saying that building a service bridge would reduce the traveling time of emergency vehicles and would also facilitate public transportation.

This bridge project was also maintained by participants during a colloquium on Verdun’s future a few years ago. It was considered one of the most important catalysts for the Borough’s overall development.

Whatever happens, committee members will surely take these numerous points into consideration when they discuss the project. Le Magazine will certainly be monitoring the committee’s conclusions and will report about them with much interest.
