Ah...gardening time!
In spite of the amount of snow on the ground, this should be a good time to speak of gardening in L'Île-des-Sœurs. The organisers of the L'Île-des-Sœurs community gardens are preparing for the 2008 season and urgently inviting all interested green thumbs to join their group.
Interested? Act soon though. Registration was supposed to end on March 20 but will be extended until the end of the month. Residents who are interested in becoming members of the Société d'Horticulture de L'Île-des-Sœurs (SH-IDS) simply need to file their request at the service desk of the Elgar Community Center (260 Elgar Street). Additional information about membership and the garden plots can be obtained at the reception desk.
The SH-IDS is a non-profit organisation that oversees the community gardens. It has about 150 members of various ages who come from different multicultural and social groups. They share a common affection for gardening and nature in general.
Development and landscaping work was undertaken in the garden sites in the last few years, transforming the area into an exceptional meeting place for garden enthusiasts.
The “dean” of the SH-IDS is Mrs. Alice Paterson who is now 93 years old. With the help of Councillor Marc Touchette, Le Magazine published an article last year about Mrs. Paterson’s involvement in the evolution of the island’s community gardens. Once again this year, she is hoping to play an active role right on-site and is looking forward to meeting her numerous friends as soon as Mother Nature makes it possible.
