Double dribble champions!
Simon Benoît-Dubé and Mathieu Claveau, two young athletes from L'Île-des-Sœurs took part in the Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf basketball team that won the championship game in the school’s division. The team also scored a victory during the finals held on March 22.
The two started out and trained in the AAA youth basketball team Les Dynamiques. This athletic training put their team in the top place of the division during the regular term. In the game series, Les Dynamiques eliminated the Laval College team during the quarter finals, and then won over the Saint-François-de-Québec team in the semi-finals. They advanced to the final match and scored a victory over Nicolas-Gatineau high school team in Trois-Rivières.

The two L'Île-des-Sœurs players developed their skills in the same team and adore practicing this highly competitive sport. Simon Benoît-Dubé is in his fourth year high school at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf , while Mathieu Claveau will be finishing his fifth year in high school in the same institution.

The trophy symbolizes their pride in being able to take one of the links of the baskets in which they played and won their last match. As tradition would have it, the winning team players have the privilege of climbing a ladder to cut one of the links from the basket’s net in the presence of their opponents. It is in good form for the losing team to be present in the court during this ceremony. Mathieu’s mother, Claire Casgrain, explained to the Magazine that her son had already participated in previous years in such a ceremony as a member of a losing team. He found that difficult and this is why he feels a certain degree of satisfaction for being part of the championship training this year.

History won’t say it but no doubt, the young Jonathan Roy of the Remparts du Québec would have been interested to experience a similar experience to further develop his athletic spirit.
