Golf fans must wait until mid-June
L'Île-des-Sœurs’s many golfers can’t wait to start hitting their balls in Trinité Golf, Spa et Sanctuaire., although they have to wait longer than previously planned because the golf practice site won’t open before mid-June.
Matthew Calpakis, president of IGG (Island Golf Group) explained to the Magazine that the heavy volume of snow Montreal received this winter had affected the planned deadline dates for the balance of the work that still needs to be done. Based on the preceding winter that was mild, he believed that the snow would be gone from the site in the beginning of March, thus predicting that the site could open towards end April this year. However, there is now a delay of six weeks before the snow completely melts. Moreover, since the blanket of snow is very thick, the soil is still submerged in water so it will take several more weeks before the workers can work on the site. Mr. Calpakis estimates that the golf practice site should be ready by June 15.

Before the first snow fell last fall, workers were able to seed the ground and people even observed that there were a few inches of sprouting here and there. The golf practice area occupies an area of approximately 300 by 100 yards in dimension, and it has the appearance of a small “par 3.” Grassy areas and sand traps were introduced to enable golfers to position their swings appropriately. Irrigation and drainage systems have been completed and the talus slopes are taking on a more definite shape. It is hoped that there will be more warm days so that the grass can be rooted firmly and fertilisation of the soil can be completed.

Construction work of the chalet and spa are also a little delayed because of this season’s severe winter. The work will however continue very soon and will be completed sometime in the fall. Manure work will continue during this time; soil has already been brought to the site and the definite landscaping of the course should be finished. The plan is for the 9-hole course to open to the public sometime next summer – 2009.
