Tony award-winning 'Amadeus' in Montreal
At the Leanor and Alvin Segal Theatre
Montreal's Leanor and Alvin Segal Theatre will be closing its 2006-2007 season with the opulent and wickedly funny Tony award-winning "Amadeus" by Peter Shaffer.
The Montreal production will feature Damien Atkins as Mozart and Jean Marchand as Antonio Salieri. Set amidst the splendour of an 18th century Hapsburg court in Vienna, Peter Shaffer's play pits blistering human ambition against divine genius. Antonio Salieri, court composer for the Austro-Hungarian Emperor, is the most renowned musician of his time… until the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arrives. Amadeus literally means "the loved one".
The play's director, innovative and respected Muscovite, Alexandre Marin, explains: "In contemporary terms, Mozart would be somewhat of a rock star – conquering millions with his art, yet leading a life that is accompanied by constant scandal in the press, inadequate behaviour in society, financial loss and early death, such as John Lennon, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain."
"Amadeus" ran for over 1,000 Broadway performances and the film adaptation, directed by Milos Forman, won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
