What could be better for your emotional and physical well-being than practicing yoga outdoors, in one of the Island's most beautiful parks?
Qi Gong at West Vancouver Park
Chinese yoga practiced outdoors during the summer
Those walking by West Vancouver Park on Wednesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons may have noticed a group of people practicing what appears to be yoga. In fact, it's Chinese yoga, Qi Gong to be exact, and yoga instructor, Paule Tremblay, has been teaching it to Island residents for the past six years.
With a background in dance and physical education, Paule has been sharing her passion for movement and exercise with her students for the past 20 years. In 1990 she started studying and practicing yoga with a number of teachers and found Qi Gong appealed to her most.
Chinese yoga
Qi Gong has been practiced in China for the past 3,000 years. Like traditional Indian yoga (the form that's most popular in North America) it is largely based on the combination of breath control with stretching exercises. It is a set of physical exercises combined with concentration training which is considered to be primarily a holistic and spiritual discipline.
Like traditional yoga, Qi Gong is reputed to increase a person's levels of health, vitality and psychological well-being. Qi Gong literally means "to cultivate energy". If you've never seen it practiced before, try to imagine a cross between Tai Chi and traditional yoga.
Qi Gong on the Island
Paule has been teaching pre-natal yoga at L'école Yoga Monde and Yoga Tao on L'Ile-des-Soeurs for the past six years.
This summer, she has been offering Qi Gong sessions at West Vancouver Park, every Wednesday morning, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and every Wednesday afternoon, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. In case of rain, the sessions are moved to the Elgar Centre. For the moment, Paule is on vacation, but classes will resume on Wednesday, August 15, as well as August 22 and 29, at West Vancouver Park. The cost is $15 per session.
Summer's in full swing, so why not take advantage now and try this ancient form of yoga in the beautiful outdoors, before we're forced to come back in? Those interested in finding out more, can email Paule, at: yogataopauletremblay@videotron.ca.
