This overpass near West Vancouver Park on the Island is on the City of Montreal's watch list.
Not all heavy trucks are overloaded
The presence of an L'Ile-des-Soeurs overpass on Montreal's black list worried a large number of Island residents. Some people were even wondering whether the structure near West Vancouver Park was too fragile to handle the load of pedestrians crossing.
It's important to remind everyone that the City of Montreal's list encompasses all bridges and overpasses that appear to need further inspection. Either cracks have been detected or debris is falling and authorities are not willing to take any chances.
Until a through inspection has taken place, heavy trucks will not be allowed to cross the overpass. Readers should understand that it's not the dimensions of a truck that define it as being overloaded. A number of factors come into play; such as the truck's weight, its load, the dimensions and number of its tires. Just by looking at a truck we are not in a position to figure out if it's overloaded.
Trucks transporting earth, from construction sites, are not usually considered too heavy. The same applies for trucks transporting material and equipment. Trucks are usually equipped with a weight monitor, allowing drivers to know the total weight of their vehicle and whether or not they are in a position to cross the bridges and overpasses on the watch list. Inspectors are on the road and keeping a watchful eye on these overpasses and strict fines will be handed out to those not obeying the restrictions.
