Extended bus lanes for L'Ile-des-Soeurs
Bus lanes 12 and 168 to cover more ground
The Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) has announced that it will be extending its No. 12 and No. 168 bus lanes, starting August 27. Buses will now run up to the Symphonia project's entrance, where a roundabout will allow them to turn around and return in the opposite direction.
The buses will still run at the exact same times, with the exception of No. 12 on weekends, which will run every 20 minutes and not every 30 minutes like before. In total, the STM will extend the lanes of both its buses by 900 metres, 1.8 kilometres in both directions. The changes will necessitate an increase of 473 service hours in 2007 and require an additional vehicle to ensure service on Sunday.

Mayor Claude Trudel, who is also STM president, is proud of the latest developments and the speed with which they took place. "It only took three months for this to get off the ground, which is exceptional," stated Mr. Trudel. "The extended lanes are a definite improvement for Island residents, both in terms of rapidity and increased accessibility to the Island via mainland Verdun." The bus lane extensions were part of overall residential developments in the Island's southern sector.

The STM had noticed a marked increase of 1,500 passengers per day, thanks to recent residential developments. With more developments expected by 2010, the STM is aware that their ridership will continue to increase.
Sunday bus a huge success
Bus No. 12 on Sundays, which began serving Islanders this past January, has been a resounding success. The average ridership is approximately 350 passengers, while the STM had predicted an average of 300. A recent poll conducted among the passengers revealed that 19% of them used to take a car or taxi before January 2007. What’s more, this new service has a satisfaction rating of 93%, notably due to the fact that passengers are now saving 22 minutes, compared to the time it took them with bus No. 168.

The positive comments have made it clear to borough officials that these improvements have increased the quality of life for Island residents.

STM passengers can get their new Planibus on board the bus until August 31, 2007 or on the STM website www.stm.info) in PDF format. By calling A-U-T-O-B-U-S (514-288-6287) and divulging the five-number code (posted on the bus stops) passengers can be informed of the exact time the bus will be coming by. For all information on all bus lines on the island of Montreal, commuters can dial STM-INFO (514-786-4636).
