Montreal's most famous drag queen impersonates Dion
What better way for the Mainline Theatre to wrap up summer and segue into fall than a light-hearted comic thriller with an edge? The legendary Mado makes her English stage debut leading a cast of six actors playing 25 roles in this dark, but funny, thriller about an obsessive Celine Dion impersonator (and namesake) who uncovers a sinister conspiracy.
Montrealers have an ongoing love/hate relationship with the famous real-life chanteuse and the play asks the audience how it really feels about fame in this "reality show" society of ours.
Starstruck society
Playwright Mark Watty sums up his take on today's celebrity worship. "In the age of YouTube, Facebook and MySpace, if everyone can have Andy Warhol's fifteen minutes of fame than what really matters?"
In the play, Mado's character Celine doesn't emulate Celine Dion because she wants her acclaim, but rather everything else that she thinks comes with the package – acceptance, security and a sense of purpose.

Director David Pellegrini also touches upon the notion of a society that is currently starstruck with the idea of stardom. "There is a general overemphasis on popular culture rather than on other important issues that face us today. However, Watty stresses that "Saving Celine" is also, "a wink and a smile to the wonderfully eccentric characters that make Montreal so unique."
Bringing the drag element to the forefront
Pellegrini was also fascinated by another facet of the show – the drag element—having never worked in this arena before.
Mado, known for her over the top, extravagant and wild performances, as well as her sometimes vicious tongue, is a diva in her own right here in Montreal, where she's built a loyal following for the past 10 years. She's excited about being part of the cast. "It's a big challenge for me to do my first major role in a play, especially in English."

The play runs until September 15, at Mainline Theatre, 3997 St. Laurent Blvd. For Box Office information, you can call 514-848-9696 or log on to www.cshow.ca. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students on Wednesday and Thursday.
