Association of L’Île-des-Sœurs owners and residents celebrates its 20th anniversary
The association bringing together L’Île-des-Sœurs owners and residents is celebrating its 20th anniversary; this event will be highlighted at its annual general meeting to be held on Wednesday, November 14.
It was in 1987 that the Association (APIDS) was founded by Yvon Grant, Andrew Poupard and Glenn Sylvain. After changing its rules a few times, this entity today brings together all people who live on the island. It also has institutional members.

In October 1999, the APIDS amended its regulations to introduce a new category of members - institutional members like condominium associations, companies, etc. In November 2004, APIDS expanded its membership to include all inhabitants of the island – tenants - and hence became l’Association des propriétaires et résidants de L’Île-des-Sœurs (APRIDS). With this new status, the association wishes to represent all island residents to give them any relevant information for them to take a stand on important issues and defend their interests. The APRIDS does not interfere, however, in landlord-tenant relationships which properly belongs to the l’Association des locataires de L’Île-des-Sœurs (ALIS).

In November 2005, APRIDS acknowledged the outstanding services rendered by Doris LeDuc-Isabelle and Robert Isabelle to the Association by making them honorary members. Mr. Isabelle, as we know, was a municipal councilor in the city of Verdun, and he continues to take a close interest in issues that affect L’Île-des-Sœurs.

The APRIDS is always present at meetings of the Borough Council. Through its president, Mrs. Juliette Barcelo, it gets involves in issues such as the island’s ultimate population, zoning changes, protection of the forest, maintenance and beautification, signage and pedestrian safety , the entry and exit points to and from the island, etc.

All members in good standing of the APRIDS are invited to the annual general meeting on Wednesday, November 14. During this meeting, it will also adopt the financial statements and budget, as well as hold elections for persons to fill different positions. Reports will be also be presented, particularly the one from the president. The Association will take this opportunity to celebrate its 20th anniversary and will be giving away door prizes.

For 2008, the main issues that will receive the attention of the APRIDS are: urban planning, obtaining adequate community and recreational facilities, better signage, measures ensuring the safety of pedestrians, better maintenance of the island, compliance with the regulations governing the maintenance, development of the northern tip and the entry and exit points in the island.

The chairman, Juliette Barcelo, invites residents of L’Île-des-Sœurs to become members of the Association to ensure the credibility of APRIDS in dealing with claims or suggestions to be submitted to the Borough of Verdun.
