Municipal officials expressed satisfaction with snow clearing operations.
Snow clearing: Borough is satisfied
Faced with this phenomenal winter, Mayor Claude Trudel believes that Verdun’s blue-collar workers did a good job. He released this comment to the local media to explain several issues.
He took the opportunity to announce his disagreement with those who would have wished for snow-clearing operations to be centralised in the City of Montreal. He said he saw no particular benefit to this approach and thinks that de-centralisation has enabled each Borough to take their specific situations into consideration.
The Borough’s General Director, Gilles Baril, shares the same view. He pointed out that in some cases, the snow plows had to pass by the streets four times to completely clear traffic lanes. The Borough also carried out an inspection of all the roofs of public buildings and the inspection revealed that there were no security risks to the public.
A complete assessment of snow clearing operations will be done in the next few weeks to determine what measures should be taken for next winter. One thing is sure: the Borough spent significantly more than what was provided for in the 2007-2008 budget. The Borough, however, has a reserve fund which allowed it to deal with this particular expense.
