Close monitoring of debris
A reader sent the Magazinea series of photos showing scattered pieces of garbage coming from neighbouring construction sites in the Pointe-Sud area of de L’île des Sœurs. After checking with the Borough, it appears that the debris was blown by the wind during the winter and that measures were taken to collect them.
The photographs submitted by this lady however show that the debris was not localised in one specific spot and was not put there intentionally. The Borough confirmed that builders have agreed to send teams for collecting wind-susceptible items around their sites. Jacques Reid, Division Chief for Permits and Inspection, was satisfied with the builders’ cooperation enabling the Borough’s teams to control the scattering of waste matter. He explained that when there is debris that is scattered in areas near construction sites, developers are notified and then they immediately take responsibility for collecting them.

These operations however have nothing to do with the shoreline cleaning campaign to which the public is invited to participate. Of course volunteers collect construction debris when they spot them, but that is not the goal of this campaign. Instead, they’re going to collect objects that were left or abandoned along the shore or on bike paths.

The Borough is delighted with the major participation of residents from all districts in Verdun for this annual campaign. It not only cleans up the shoreline and other public places, but it also demonstrates the awareness and desire of residents to improve the quality of their environment.

This year, the great shoreline clean-up will be held on Saturday, May 3. Residents of L’Île-des-Soeurs will meet at the Elgar Community Centre at 260 Elgar Street at 9h30, while in the mainland, participants will meet at 8h30 at the Serres in 7000 LaSalle Boulevard.
