"CANADIENS SIGN MOMMA'S BOY!?"
Ok, so after landing legit thug Georges Laraque this headline may not scream, but Josh Gorges at less than a Mill for each of the next 3 years is more in Bob We Trust. The Habs' most-improved defenseman this past season tells my good friend Ric Peterson that he'll probably buy his Mom a new sportscar to celebrate his new deal. He's ticked that Dad, who owns a few DQ stores in Kelowna, BC won't come up with a Gorges-inspired ice cream flavour.
I've been thinking of getting a Thundermonkey tattoo, but I have to reconsider now after studying the major works of art on the arms of Danny Desriveaux (Montreal native but raised in Laval) and Alain Kashama. Kash has a map of Africa with leopard's spots and a C for Congo to represent his family's roots and the animal that inspired their name. Desriveaux has a map of Haiti with his parents' home cities marked, and a football in between the numbers 514 and 450 marking his local flav.
Best nickname I've been reminded of lately? Jeremaine Copeland, one of the stars of the Als' 2002 Grey Cup win chuckles at the name he gave Ben "Velcro Hands" Cahoon. "I called him Carlton Banks cuz he can't dance!" laughs Cope, who delighted in playing the Fresh Prince to Cahoon while they were teammates. "Ben never wanted to dance with me and Kwame (Cavil, another former Alouette) but he was the creator of one of our best endzone celebrations ever...we ran the play in reverse in the endzone. Mostly Ben just gave the ball back to the referee though." Just like on his milestone catch to surpass Als' icon Peter Dalla Riva.
Dalla Riva's longtime teammate Sonny Wade will link up with CJAD during halftime of the Calgary game...Ol' #14's face is on the tickets of season-subscribers to honour Grey Cup heroes. Sonny says he still has the shoes he wore on the frozen turf in the '77 game, staples and all!
Wayne Conrad, who played centre for Wade, is starting bidding on his '77 Grey Cup Ring and Game worn jersey at $5500.00. This honourable gesture is to raise money for the Proudfoot Fund to help fight Lou Gehrig's Disease. E-mail me (rick.moffat@cjad.com) if you'd like to place a reserved bid in this unique silent auction.
I talked to Guy Lapointe about his recent naming to the Quebec Sports Hall of Fame. He's still blown away by the face the Canadiens lost only 1 game at home that season when they lost only 8 in the entire regular season. As for his status as Centennial alltime prankster, he says Shutt and Peter Mahovlich gave him serious competition in the joke department.
One of my favorite Als from the 2002 Grey Cup Champs, Reggie Durden, is now coaching high school ball back home in Houston, Texas. Wonder if he's fessed up to his nickname---"Dirty".
